This is an advanced course that explores the fundamental theory that underpins security engineering.

It enables suitably experienced practitioners to apply their detailed knowledge to provide appropriate advice and solutions to a range of force protection engineering problems. The course aims to provide a detailed assessment of the threats and damage mechanisms coupled with a range of solutions or mitigating techniques.

Course structure

One course per year; 8 weeks duration per course.

What you will learn

The course consists of 6 weeks of lectures, presentations, tutorials and practicals. Students are introduced to each subject area and then exercises and worked examples are used to stimulate learning. Groups are encouraged to share experience and contribute to discussions. There is a week of visits covering vehicle impact, hardened structures, barriers and perimeter security. The final week project leads to formal presentations by all students. External lecturers provide additional depth to the teaching.

The course is suitable for those with a degree in civil engineering or a similar discipline.

Location and travel

Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders.

Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales. It is 7 miles from Swindon, the nearest town, which lies off the M4 at the hub of Britain’s motorway network.

Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London less than two hours away by car.

All visitors must be pre-booked in at reception by the person they are visiting on the campus.
